These birds are incredible - they soar upwards and sing their hearts out for a couple of minutes at altitude very loudly - a real treat. No hope at all of getting video of the bird but at least you get an idea of the song.
The mid 1970s...the South Downs of Sussex...near the village of Rottingdean...summer holidays...If I close my eyes I can see the blue sky...the English Channel way off in the distance...and I can hear the skylarks singing.
What a beautiful place to hear this delightful sound! My fave skylark experience - so far - was at Maiden Castle in Dorset, but any big open grassland seems to suit these remarkable birds. Their song never fails to fill my heart with joy, thanks for the reminder; I've not heard them for real so far this year, but I'm sure I soon will!
