Enjoy a fine onboard lap with the late Clay Regazzoni, driving a BRM, at Zeltweg's circuit in 1973. Only natural sounds!

Note, in the low right side of the car the "T" letter, indicating that he was driving a test car during the occasion.

All credits goes to the original capper.

  • @328gts86 I'm very sure that's Clay. Only two were the drivers for the BRM team on that race, JP Beltoise and Regazzoni in this case. As the Beltoise's helmet style are very different from the driver that appears driving on this video, so, I have no doubts that is Rega driving the car. ;-)

  • Those where the days........Not only did he have to change gear using a gear lever (!) that would kick back and give him blisters, but he had to accelerate and brake using only his skill and judgement (not those of the electronics engineer who set his car up) and he still found time to look in his mirrors. And all this with the knowlege that if he crashed, he would (and did) get hurt. What a great bloke.

    And the car had a proper steering wheel too. Look it's round.......like a wheel.

  • @328gts86: that's Clay, no doubt. You can just not see enough of his helmet to see the little swiss "white cross" in front, but that's his helmet livery.

    I actually like the fact that drivers in these days never changed their helmet styles.. Again one area where commerce seemed to be less important than tradition... Anyone with me on that?

  • Those were the days - real men racing on real circuits. Compare this with a lap of Abu Dhabi / Valencia / Sepang / Shanghai etc etc ..... F1 is a pale shadow of its former self.

  • @McLarenMercedes First of all if Irvine won the title it would have been because Schumacher broke his legs in a crash that year. Also Enzo always respected Clay for his courage and because he was focused on his job, driving. Ickx left because they no longer wanted him at Ferrari as he was complaining publicly about the car. That is something Enzo didn't like. In the end Lauda didn't lose as many races as Schumacher neither the 312 T2 was such a dominant car, the McLaren was really close.

    He was decent, and his win in Long Beach 1976 was true class. However you surely can't compare him to Gilles Villeneuve, Niki Lauda, Jacky Ickx or Carlos Reutemann?

    When having the best car in 1976 he didn't win the title after Lauda's accident. I mean Irvine almost won in 1999...

    Btw, Regazzoni raced for BRM in 1973. I wonder if he would could join Lauda in Ferrari for 1974 if Ickx hadn't signed for Lotus (who can blame him the '73 Ferrari was dreadful).

    Marlboro sponsored BRM in 1972 and 1973, and both Regazzoni and Lauda were BRM drivers that season. In 1973 Ferrari had Jacky Ickx and Arturo Merzario.

    Btw, Marlboro switched to McLaren in 1974 and remained with them for 23 seasons until their last season as the main sponsor in 1996.

    Here's something for you to chew on. Ron Dennis's racing team was called Marlboro Project 4 and this is why McLaren cars were called MP4/1, MP4/2 and MP4/26 today.
