4 of the main things you need to know for Mig Welding Aluminum are :
http//:www.weldingtipsandtricks.com

1. you need a spool gun

2. push dont pull

3 spray transfer does not sound like bacon frying

4. use more stickout than you would for mig welding steel

Mig welding aluminum is just plain more tricky than mig welding steel. Everything is a lot more sensitive. Wire feed, voltage, and even the flow of shielding gas makes a difference.

You go thru a lot more tips....thats just part of the gig when you Mig weld aluminum

  • Like all of Jodies, top notch. Thank you for the time and effort you invest in helping others.

  • The spool gun should be on + or - please help

  • @weldingtipsandtricks Hey man, big fan. I would like to see more mig welding aluminum videos. Thanks Alot your tips helped me out during my junior year in highschool welding.

  • i can see alot of non welders here... i watched this vid 2 years ago when i started welding at austal... good hobby welder. but a fail at our work. im a fitter so most of my welding without a shield. Listen to your welder. get some 1/8+ plate set your voltage on 25 ws on 580+ gas on 30cfm pull the trigger close your eyes and listen. it sounds smooth then it starts to crackel. when it crackles jerk the barrel about 1/8 in forward listen for the crackle then repete the steps. after try a shield

  • what model is capable of using the spool gun? my friend said he has a millermatic but the gun doesn't work with his model. I have a big Hobart Powerweld ac./dc stick welder/generator (16 hp ohnan ) that I want to trade for a millermatic that can do aluminum.

  • This weld looks pretty good, may I ask you what welder and spool gun were being used in this demonstration?

    Thanks Steve

  • you can weld stainless steel to carbon steel....

  • @Chadscarpetcleaning use a stainless steel brush and use it only for this, gas is straight Argon or an Argon Helium blend if you need more penetration as ionization and thermal conductivity is much higher with a Helium blend over straight Argon. I guess it will depend on the thickness of what you are welding. Plus Aluminum is very picky, gotta be clean and try to "push" the puddle if you can, the shielding gas tends to cover better when pushing.

  • Can you do more videos on mig welding aluminum and stainless steel, and prep and what kind of gases. Thank you

  • Also when mig welding aluminum you have to use a smaller diameter aluminum filler beacuse of expansion. IE: I use 0.030 4043 aluminium filler with a 0.035 tip in my 3035 Spoolmate. I have the Millermatic 210 with a 3035 Spoolmate and it can do anything. I have used it for several years now with not one ounce of trouble. Stainless comes out very nice with a mig, but I recommend you spring for the large roll so it can thread out easier. The small roll can bird nest in a heartbeat.
