Marielle learns new words.

This is a video of when our baby Marielle heard for the first time. She failed her newborn hearing screening, failed a follow up ABR at 6 weeks, and received hearing aids at 3 months of age (when this video was taken).

When she was 2 1/2 she received an Advanced Bionics cochlear implant in her right ear. Her hearing aids had given her a nice head start on her auditory skills and she very quickly adjusted to her CI.

Marielle is still in preschool but already testing age appropriate for her language development. She continues to amaze and entertain us every day!

  • I have moderate-severe and I have had hearing aids for a year now. Purple ones! With tye dye moldings! I hope your child has a blessed future. :)

  • @GuitarQueen31 The purple ones she had were the cutest. Now she has clear with purple glitter.

  • You both are very badly parenting to force a young baby wear and you are very cruel and i am very happy being deaf and proud, never wear a hearing aid what is so problem? .. sound like you never like being deaf child

  • Mostly I just approve these because hearing people don't believe me when I tell them what jackasses tell our family. It's a wonder anyone wants to be a part of the Deaf culture when this is the welcome reception.

  • The latest guidelines call for hearing loss to be identified by 1 month, fitted with aids by 3 months, and in early intervention by 6 months!

  • I wish ABR and OAE were around when I was born, my hearing impairment wasn't discovered/recognized until I was 3.

Besh wishes to you and Marielle in going forwards. Oh, and hope she takes better care of her hearing aids than I did for the first couple of years *cough* :p

  • @asldeaffriend For the record, our daughter knows sign language, cued speech AND can listen and talk better than most hearing kids her age. She has access to all these options but she chooses to listen and talk.

  • @021311 When she was a baby she needed them every 2 months. Now it's 2x a year (She's 4.) They are $150 for 2 and our health savings account pays for them.

  • Your baby gotta remold that hearing aid every year, it's gonna be expensive..

  • This is so cute :)

  • @Courseaslsign i was born with 10% hearing in my left ear ad 30% in my right. i learned to sign and signed until i was about 5. then i had numerous surgeries and i have 50%/80% now. talking is better, i would rather hear and be able to speak clearly than to sign everything. signing is so limited since not everyone knows it

  • @mjp3md she is hard of hearing i know in video not in real life when i never meet her few month ago
