The BNSF was clearing the tracks southwest of Aurora and I had a chance to capture it on film.

why cant they use a plow instead of a blower ? is it because the snow is very dense and compact ? I can imagine a plow having a hard time getting through this dense stuff , plus i guess there is a risk of derailment too ?

I tired as a mechanic working the snow trains after having been an engineer for 35 years. The snow removing years were very boring and fricking cold while maintaining or repairing these old beast. The rotor is like a huge flywheel designed to run an average 2,000 rpm max about 3,200 or less. Any faster you run the risk of bending the rotor shafts in heavy dense snow other wise you can maintain a more constant speed in light snow but snow drifts are compacted this is why you can walk on it.Cheers

This was an almost daily occurrence during the winter on some of the lines in the Sierras as well as the long abandoned narrow-gauge railroads in the Colorado Rockies.
The only difference on the narrow gauge was there were two or more steam locomotives required to drive the rotary snowplows through the drifts--and were probably much slower.
