The only thing that stops rational crime, is making people delusional in a very specific way (like religion and some so called 'philosophies' do). Changing the system so that behaviours we call 'crime' no longer are rational will stop those behaviours. Another topic entirely is mental illness and it's consequences (mislabelled 'crime'), that should be treated like any other disease and its consequences (like heart attack victim collapsed on someone and he fell out the window - a sad accident)

Until 'the others' that is society, will not explicitly recognise 'you' the individual as a factual and important part of the whole structure; as something that is needed and desirable for whatever our purpose is chosen to be; and will watch your back in exchange for your positive contribution to the whole; until then there is no rational reason to NOT commit crime, and crime is mostly rational, that is monetary related or for survival.

We must accept that crime is not some 'anomaly' something 'out of this world', and that is just what will happen if the conditions are not proper for human life. Humans are animals to, and you wouldn't take a hungry lion and tell it to just 'compete for what you need to survive'. Our civilisation is based on a false assumption that human is a 'moral being' and morality is based on fear and punishment, and that's what we have.
