When Matilda Lotz was a six year old girl scratching out portraits of farm animals in the dirt of her Franklin, Tennessee backyard, she had no idea she was in training as an artist... and had no idea that the existence of her family was soon to be threatened by one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War.

Scarred by the loss of life, including the loss of her farm animals, Matilda will grow up to combine her love of animals with her maturing artistic skills. Her works, known in both America and Europe, are now recognized as beautiful paintings that capture both the appearance and essence of Matilda's four-legged friends.

The Franklin, Tennessee house in which Matilda lived as a child still stands. It's a wonderful artistic showpiece itself, built by Matilda's father, Master Craftsman Johann Albert Lotz.
