Cantonese is indeed more slangish lexically and grammatically thus lending itself more to casual register than Putonghua. The loose grammar structure of Cantonese mimics conversational usages much closer than the more structured Putonghua. Cantonese therefore sounds cruder, rougher, blunter but more direct and less veiled by fake politeness.

Cantonese is really brusque of a language, it's not elegant.

Alot of foreigners who study's Chinese gets really repulsive when they first hear Cantonese after long time from studying Mandarin.

Cantonese is just not classy, not something you can present to the table.

Think about it, foreigners say, you actually have an advantage "not knowing" how to speak Cantonese in HK, see what I mean ?
