I studied the impact of murals and street art on the people who live in the San Francisco Mission District. It is an interesting time (2008) to study the Mission because there is a new wave of gentrification and an increasing number of non-Latino (mostly hipster) kids who are choosing to live there and modifying the demographic. I was interested in people's reaction to the different type of murals and graffiti that these kids are bringing to the streets and how people are reacting and interpreting these changes in style and themes.
The film is really about identification and self-representation but I found that the murals mainly affected people who took no part in any process of mural-making and therefore, didn't care much about the style but rather about the message and beauty of the artwork. I am assuming here that murals are a medium, like a newspaper or magazine, for self-representation and that they convey information to all of their viewers. Unlike any other medium, murals are unique in that they are accessible to everyone and speak for them in a way that includes their voice. Often times, the artists are either of the same background, or have had similar experiences as the people of the community they can be found in.
Great video and study! Thanks!
