Thats called a poke and wrap. Tape is for insulating the connection and zip tie is so the tape don't come of.. A lot of big companies require that all their connections be done this way. And crimp caps are the preferred use for car audio installers because of ease of use and its 2x faster than using butt connectors..

I do all my systems myself. use crimps ring/spade terminals, and butt-connectors. they make for a much cleaner and best pressed connection. Half the installers I know dont do alot of things right, and thats what keeps me away from those people when it comes to stereo installs

Butt connectors are not the greatest connectors to use in car audio. They are fine for remote turn on and power wires but for speaker wires they are not Ideal. The problem with them is there potential to add resistance to the wire. While not a big deal when you are just using a head unit, when you are using an amp some of the power is lost to heat. Another potential with butt end connectors is that they are prone to corrosion. Soldering with heat shrink is best.

@skylineqrt4 I will agree with the solder and heat shrink. But I use butt connectors if there is no amps and people are just having me hook up a deck. If there is a amp being ran then I will run new speaker wire to each speaker with no brakes in the wire for best power transfer.
