30th of may 2009 was National Calvijn Day. The reformer Calvijn was born 500 years ago and his influence is still remarkable in The Netherlands. In the church of Dordrecht, famous because of the so called Synode 1618-1619 in conjunction with the translation of the Bible (Staten Bijbel) and lots of other historical memorabilia. This organ piece is part of a close to 2 hours television broadcast. ( http://player.omroep.nl/?aflID=9815880 )
Is it established that Sweelinck was a Catholic? (His patron certainly was.) If it is true, it seems rather ironic his writing Calvinist-inspired psalm settings, which are today, four hundred years later, used to celebrate the Dutch National Calvin Day. Yes, you might cite Wm. Byrd and other Catholics in England at that time, but the Anglican Church was not at all as radically Protestant as the Calvinist church was - not by a long shot. Was JPS just "passing" or is this merely spurious?
