On December 2, 2004, The New America Foundation held a forum entitled Al-Qaida and Militant Islam. Participants talked about internal power struggles within the various factions of the Islamic faith and the adoption of militant ideologies to secure power in the Muslim world. Among the topics they addressed were the formation and growth of the al-Qaida network, social and economic conditions in the Middle East, and the underlying motivations behind the September 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S. Following their remarks they answered questions from the audience.

In this clip, Peter Bergen introduces Mike Scheuer to the audience. Bergen states that Scheuer headed the CIA's Bin Laden Unit and that he was "moved aside" because he was too anti-Bin Laden.
