  • @Gargess i might have suggested you use Audacity to record the audio from this video, but I wouldn't want Youtube to be closed down :-)

  • I'm disappointed that they didn't lay this down for the movie soundtrack.

  • I have heard many versions of this song, but none that could beat the one by damh the bard on the album "the crow man"

  • @christopherbreach - Thanks for those suggestions...these are new names for me.

  • @tennis11ish The Fairport version is nice, if you like it you should check out Alela Diane and Alina Hardin's version, which is personally my favourite. Here's the link if you'd like

    youtube.com/watch?v=bUns2Ye0wWM

  • Also, check out the Fairport Convention version. Interesting variations on the lyrics. Example: "And then Lord Darnell he took his wife and he sat her on his knee, Saying, ``who do you like the best of us, Matty Groves or me? ''

And then up spoke his own dear wife, never heard to speak so free.

``i'd rather a kiss from dead matty's lips than you and your finery.''

Whatever the words....Matty and Lady Darnell are both dead at the end of the song!

  • Woe is me, Oh woe is me, why staid ye not your hand

For you have killed the fairest lad in all of England

    In all of England

  • The first swing that Little Matty Groves made, it hurt Lord Darnell sore

But the last swing that Lord Darnell made, little Matty swung no more.

    Little Matty swung no more.

How now, how now my fair young bride, draw on your pretty clothes

Now tell me do you like me best, or like your Mattie Groves

    Or the dying Mattie Groves

She picked up Mattie's dying head she kissed from cheek to chin

Said it's Mattie Groves I'd rather have than you Lord and all your kin

than you Lord and all your kin

  • Oh what is this, said little Matty Groves

as he stood up in bed?

I fear it is your husband's man, and I will soon be dead

oh I will soon be dead.

When he woke up, Lord Darnell was standing at his bed feet.

Saying how do you like my stone white pilla case

How do you like my sheets?

How do you like my pretty little woman, layin in your arms asleep?

  • She stepped right up to Mattie Groves, her eyes cast to the ground

Sayin stay, oh please, oh please come with me pray as you pass through the town

As you pass through the town

I cannot go, I dare not go, I fear it would mean my life

For I see by the little ring you wear you are Lord Darnell's wife

You're the great Lord Darnell's wife
