A real-time look at the operation of WTV's control room and studio for the production of 'Friday Night Live' broadcast live to air from the station on Wellington Street in Perth.

WTV is a community station broadcasting on Digital Channel 44 to 95% of Perth Metropolitan area.

Being a small community station with a small budget the control room is made up of a mix of consumer and professional broadcast equipment. For those technically savy below is the setup

Control Room
At the heart is the Newtek Tricaster VT5 vision mixer which is a pc based switcher system. Attached is the USB LC-11 control panel and Timewarp panel for playing clips. Graphics and supers are done through the Newtek Livetext software on a separate PC. The preview plasma in the control room is created through a separate mulltiviewer.

Studio
There are 3 Sony mini-dv cameras in the studio which are converted from HDMI to SDI then connected into the vision switcher. DMX Led lights are fitted in the studio which are software controlled to chase and change colours. A separate 4-channel mixer feeds the plasma in the studio. There are 2 DVD players running animated logo loops. As the VT5 switcher has only two video outputs (Pgm/Prv), what is selected on the preview bus can also be sent to the studio plasma.

Live Crosses
These are done using a Vividwireless 4G gateway. On location there is a consumer camera with HDMI out going into the 'Teradek Cube' attached to the camera which then streams back to the gateway through wireless then back to the station through 4G. Talent IFB is done through cordless voip phones also connected to the gateway.

Audio
Audio is mixed separately through an analogue mixer and fed into the VT5 system then out via a SDI audio/video stream to master control for broadcast. Wireless lapel microphones are used for the studio talent which run through individual compressors and audio gates.

Crew in the control room when looking from above are left Producer, middle Director and right CG operator. Further right is the audio booth and master control is in a seperate room. There are 3 camera operators in the studio plus, Floor Manager, Audio Assistant and Producer.
