This video is a part of an exercise for DST 501 Rethinking Disability. The exercise is called Hidden City. In groups, we were given neighbourhoods to explore and try to find things that disable people with impairments. We could report on our findings in whatever method we wished. I chose to record video on my ipod.

As we walked, I was talking to another student about sensory issues with shopping in a mall, especially around the winter holiday season. I noticed that the pavement was uneven, posing a difficulty for wheelchair users, people with mobility impairments and people with low vision.

We noticed some accessible picnic tables, but they were separate from the other picnic tables and so excluded wheelchair users.

We reached a petting zoo/farm and there were stairs going to the washroom. If there were a ramp, it was not immediately obvious and we did not see it. There was also a steep grade on the path down the hill, which can be intimidating for some wheelchair users.

Another student pointed out that the drinking fountain was not accessible to a person using a wheelchair. I wondered whether the animal pens were accessible.

In accordance with full accessibility and inclusion, I will be going through and transcribing the conversation as best I can. I find the auto-captioning to be very faulty, so I will do transcripts until I figure out how to do captioning.
