From 1936, this is one of the original Popeye cartoons created by Fleischer Studios. One of the things that set Fleischer Studios appart from other animation studios at the time was that they were located in New York City. This gave their cartoons a gritty, urban realism rather than the bight and sunny cartoons of the west coast. The gym presented here is probably very what gym were like back in the 1930's. Miles away from modern health clubs with shiny new machines, huh?
