This is a 'trio' version of the ballad 'Misty' - with lots of extra information helpful (I hope) to jazz piano students. At my site at
http://web.newsguy.com/dougmck
there is a much clearer copy of the video for download, as well as a transcription, the midi file recorded with the video, and an MP3 file of the bass and brushes backing I recorded separately. On my DVD -http://www.bushgrafts.com/jazz/DVDbuy.htm
is a solo version - video and printable transcription.

  • The first chord on Misty is a tritone, right? I figured as much since it's reharmonized as a slash chord Eb with a D in the bass. Could you also just play whole tone harmony when you see these types of slash chords?

  • @1979saxman The first chord is a D with an Eb in the bass. Another way of describing it would be an Eb diminished chord. It acts to sort of create a tension that is released when the EbMaj7 arrives. An Eb whole/half diminished scale sit nicely over this chord - see 0:35

  • Just soooo nice!

  • Absolutely superb. Lost count of the number of times I've listened to this rendition. What a beautiful ending.

  • Lovely re-harmonizations!

Check out our version of Misty on our channel!

  • Eh...

And Misty is swung just for the record, it kind of bugs me when people play it straight.

  • @ramboIII3 There is much to learn from this lesson!

  • Wonderful!!!!!!Hugs.

  • Very nice!

  • The video is called " JAZZ PIANO LESSON " I guess the definition of lesson has changed lately.

  • EXCELLENT!!!! i love erroll Garner style of playing and if i didnt see ur hands playing this i would have thought it was Erroll himself! great job!

  • This is the only tutorial Ive seen showing all 3: you playing, the notes you hit and the music sheet (and memos). Brilliant!
