  • it really just depends on how each language (i mean those that use roman letters) decide to spell the name of korea according to how they would spell other words with similar sounds and stuff. i think that since korea (with tight relations with the US and everything over the decades) have just decided to go with the american-english spelling of the country as their official name.

  • Just like Kim is spelled Kim and not Cim. The letter K is a more accurate sounding letter compared to C which can me sounded like an S, I personally think it empowers the word and make it look alot better.

  • Well, before Japan took over Korea, it was spelled "Corea". After the invasion, Japan changed Corea to "Korea" because the "K" is after the "J".

  • @zousandazou FUCKING JJOKBARI DIE IN FIRE!

  • @NoNoSpice JJOKBARI DIE IN FIRE!

  • Jjokbari changed 'Corea' from 'Korea' during occupation since J comes after K, thus jjokbari would be called before Coreans in things like the olympics. The more Coreans understand that this is a lingering effect of imperialism, the sooner we can correct this injustice!

  • korea with letter k is much cooler that corea with letter c.. am i right? hehe

  • because corea looks girly?

  • Good question! Why Korean is not spelled Corea? And answer is Japan. Cool! In 19 Century "Korea" was commonly called "Chosun" - however "Chosun" means, in Chinese language, “poor servant county of Chinese empire”. Then In 1895 Japan won Korean Independence from China and gave her a new name ”Korea” based on legendary Kingdom. Oh, by the way, “Corea” is just another form of “Korea” in Latin languages like French. As English became internationally strong language, Korea became preferred to Corea.

  • lol, koreaphile, I thought I was original with that one but I guess not. but i guess i really am one

  • One very convincing argument that the change from Corea to Japan was nothing to do with Japanese insecurities about the alphabet: the preferred official name of Korea under Japanese occupation was Chosun or Chosen (indeed in the 1930s Korean grammar I have it refers consistently to "Chosenese" and "Chosen"). Chosen of course comes before Japan in the alphabet. I'm not sure it's accurate to simply say that it used to be spelt with a "c" anyway, I've seen 19th-century documents reference Korea.

  • Who cares the order in Olympics in Japan? The story is nothing but the reflection of Korean inferior complex to Japan. When Japan and Korea hosted World Cup in 2002, Koreans strongly insisted Korea-Japan instead of Japan-Korea(alphabet order). Stop having stupid persistence in order! Korea is far below than Japan in every aspect. There is no competition here. It's really silly to see bullshit comments of Koreans.
