  • Yes, that's so true.

The US was loved and respected by many different countries in which we have assisted thru military and financial support. It's only been the last 7 yrs & 7mos we've proven to the world that we will lie down to a corrupt government for anything but will not stand up for something. We are no longer the benevolent patron, but that of hypocrites of the highest order.

  • Ithom, you're absolutely correct. And its testimony to the reason we should eliminate covert intervention in other countries. It never has the intended effect. Never.

    'Blowback'

When will we learn that world prosperity is in our own best interest. (The more prosperous they are, the more they will buy our goods and services...the poorer they are, the worse it is for everyone. ie deforestation flooding, famine, contagion, inflamatory propaganda )

Who would think to attack a benevolent patron?

  • Yes, we used the Afghans against the Soviets the same way that the Chinese & Russians used the Vietnamese in its war against us. However, I also think it's important to explain that our money was suppose to go to the Afghans not the Afghan Arabs, who rose to power by our weapons thru this conflict. It was never our intention to give weapons to strongly Islamic radicals that use these weapons against anyone who isn't Islamic. That's all I'm adding. Not CIA but ISI did this.

  • Well no, Ithom, I stand by my statements. They are not in the least misleading.

There never was a motivation to support the Afghans' fighting for freedom. (I don't think anyone in the CIA or the Pentagon ever thought of it that way.)

The point was to fight the Soviets on the Afghan battlefield using Afghans wielding our weapons and techniques.

The objective was to fight the Soviets without looking like we were. (No casualties!) Freeing Afghanis was simply an afterthought at best.

  • To cont. The Arabs fought alongside those factions. This is how the charge arose that they were the creation of the CIA. What would be the point of the CIA recruiting, training or funding Arabs when there were hundreds of thousands Afghans all too willing to fight? CIA didn't need arabs they didn't need CIA. You're comment is therefore misleading. To add to this Ayman al-Zawahiri confirmed that the Afghan Arabs didn't receive any US funding during the war in Afghanistan.

  • We supported the Afghans fighting for their country's freedom, as did other countries but we didn't support the Afghan Arabs & other Muslims who came to fight in Afghanistan for broader goals. Afghan Arabs functioned completely independently & had their own sources of funding. The US wanted to be able to deny the CIA was funding the Afghan war, so our support was funneled thru ISI. ISI made the decision which Afghan factions to arm & train, tending to favor the most Islamist & pro-Pakistan.

  • Please, don't forget Lorna, it was the CIA that trained Afghanistan to fight a terrorist war against the Soviets. It was those very sabotage techniques we taught them that they are using against us now. (It was the CIA's idea to win the 'cold war' by depleting the Soviet's resources in a pointless and protracted war.)

We have been looking down the barrels of the very weapons we gave the Afghanis to use against the Soviets (the supreme irony...)

Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind.

    STOP THE WAR!

  • Midex, I take that back. Zionists do own America. Oil Companies are just allowed to run amock. I watched a program on CNN tonight & they're continuing to systematically wipe out the Palestinians by stealing their land & settling. Never going to have peace in Israel until this stops.

  • Abu Zarqawi is not CIA. When Bush declared war on Iraq he made terrorists and Zarqawi was one of them. And, Zionists don't own American ~ oil companies do.

  • In 2005, the UK reported that Iraqi police used electric drills as a tool of torture. Just last year an al-Qaeda safe house was discovered with manuels on how to torture victims which included using electric drills, meat cleavors, blow torches, etc. Al-Qaeda is NOT CIA, but an alliance of Sunni Islamic militant organizations founded after the Soviet war in Afghanistan. The US and Britain are funding anti-terrorist groups inside of Iran.
