There was a lot of "one-upsmanship" in those days. But it was respectful!

@ArthurRimbaud31 yepp yepp. My music library branches out when I listen to songs that influence my favourite bands/artists. :D

@PatrickEganLong ...both under the influence of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. McCartney said that Sgt Pepper woudn't have happened without Pet Sounds, while Brian Wilson put that together after hearing and being so impressed by Rubber Soul. We owe so much to both bands.

the beach boys evolved much like the beatles, from insanely catchy, masterfully crafted pop tunes to mature and reflective melodic wonder and in the most beautiful of ways

I love both arrangements, but maybe even especially like this looser, humbly charming version.

Mike Love's finest moment. While many of his post-1960s contributions to the Beach Boys legacy are mediocre at best, 'Big Sur' stands out as a beautiful love letter to pastoral beauty.
