The show is the first television series to feature Superman and began filming in 1951 in California. Sponsored by cereal manufacturer Kellogg's, the syndicated show's first, and last, air dates are disputed but generally accepted as September 19, 1952 and April 28, 1958. The show's first two seasons (ep. 1-52) were filmed in black-and-white while seasons three through six (ep. 53-104) were filmed in color.

George Reeves plays Clark Kent/Superman with Jack Larson as Jimmy Olsen, John Hamilton as Perry White, and Robert Shayne as Inspector Henderson. Phyllis Coates plays Lois Lane in the first season with Noel Neill stepping into the role in the second season (1953). Stories follow Superman as he battles crooks, gangsters, and other villains in the fictional city of Metropolis while masquerading "off-duty" as Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent. Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, Clark's colleagues at the office, often find themselves in dangerous situations which can only be resolved with Superman's timely intervention.

Opening sequence;

Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! ("Look! Up in the sky!" "It's a bird!" "It's a plane!" "It's Superman!")... Yes, Superman ... strange visitor from another planet, who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men! Superman ... who can change the course of mighty rivers, bend steel in his bare hands, and who, disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper, fights a never-ending battle for truth, justice, and the American way!

  • This show is 100 times better than 'Superman Returns' and will still 100 times better than the next piece of crap Warner Bros. churns out.

  • Good old b/w Superman , from a wonderful time ,being a kid. Its so good to see and hear this again. We must have seen every episode at least 20 times, from the 1950's into the 1970's.

  • Faster than a speeding bullet, change the course of mighty rivers, bend steel in his bare hands, but yet he was unable to change Lois's mind on Clark Kent. Hmmmm interesting.

  • @kd6rxl They still have reruns of this nearly 60 years later guess they never thought people would still be watching. However for any newer shows they produce they should consider the possibility people might still be watching 60 years later Space 1999 was a hit at the time but date is so outdated today what do they call it in reruns Just Space?

  • The show was an absolute monster hit and and the typecasting utterly wrecked George Reeves career. After the show was mostly shot he landed a major role in "From Here to Eternity" with Burt Lancaster and Frank Sinatra. But his scenes were mostly edited out *after* preview audiences started catcalling and cracking up.

  • Syndicate in Europe and Asia? They barely had B&W TV in 1952.

  • Why dont y'all move to some backwater cesspool nation if you dont like the American way? If one of you commie fools had enough guts to do so, then you can get the good dose of violence that these lowlife foreigners can dish out and wish you had never left the best place on the (Daily) Planet. Outsiders risk life and limb to get to the U.S., and I may add that they have more brains than the morons posting on this page.

  • @ace69er Yeah showing kids violence on tv, all the westerns had gun fights almost every episode but years later Little House on Prarrie, Dr.Quinn Medicine woman, and Paradise showed you could have successful westerns without always having violence.

  • The American way had to brainwash with politics don't think that introduction would work so well to sell over seas did they change it to syndicate in Europe and Asia?

  • @mtxe I guess he didn't want to get caught by LA MIGRA!!!

  • Yeah for Superman !!

  • @mtxe

    Because he was raised from infantcy to believe in the american way, and thus he believes it. That's why everyone believes in i, for that matter. Also, it's better fer ratings.
