  • great!! thanks. But is the official video or what??

  • There is very little "official" stuff from Young, and this video is not a difference...

  • @uddichschmuddich They're doing two completely different things. Young sounds far more like Coltrane than Dolphy here. (And to all of the people calling this "jazzy", check out some Celtic or Indian music because this recording has much more to do with either of those genres than jazz.)

  • Are other La Monte Young pieces similar to this? Are there other similar artists (drone with jazzy lead)? - I would find out myself, but my internet connection is very poor (takes about 20mins to load this video - it was worth it). Many thanks.

  • Great video, great music!

    Thank you for uploading...

Is this John Cale the same who played with the Velvet Underground?

  • In 1962 John Cale was still at Goldsmiths College, London...read the title : 19X63 = 19 October 1963, that's the day this recording was made... :)

  • this is pretty darn neat.

  • I first encountered these particular sounds in 1987 while listening to a German radio station. They aired a 20 minute excerpt from the Dorian Blues improvisations. I was 17 then - and totally thrilled by these indescribable tones. To this day this very session is among the most beautiful music I ever heard.

Automatische Updates deaktivieren * Could anyone explain to me why it is called B flat dorian. It sounds to me like A-sus. The Drone seems to be E and A. And the Improvisation is rather Pentatonik than Dorian. The recording may be detuned, but then it is still pentatonic. What do you think? Nevertheless - great piece!

  • yeah La Monte's sax is very like what Terry Riley would later do, not coincidentally!

  • this is not jazz but it's awesome
