America's drive to conclude a Middle East peace deal before President George Bush leaves office in January was always going to be wildly over-optimistic but Barack Obama is likely to set an equally pressing deadline to finish the job.

Barack Obama says he'll reshape US foreign policy with particular emphasis on the Middle East. He promises to put the Israeli-Palestinian conflict back on the American agenda. He blames the Bush administration for having neglected the issue. But is his position really that different? And is he free to change foreign policy?

The cycle of killing on both sides (Israel/Arab) must stop for ANY forward progress to be made. That's the responsibility of individual States.

Any leader cannot go to it's people & say "just sit there & take it". Therefore any external power like the USA really has it's hands tied. IF peace comes, it will be because of courageous leadership from the individual countries to stop the cycle of violence.

Just how badly do the participants WANT to stop? There is enough "blame" to go around to all.

Wow1of the best interviews I've heard! Pres.Obama has his work cut out 4 him yikes! I say the USA needs to withdraw totally from Iraq! Especially since we went over there on a flook/weapons of mass destruction/911. I say we get out because, its 2 costly to b there just to convert to democracy when the men & women of the USA r coming back with mental problems, poor healthcare even @ the VA hospitals, no jobs etc.Hell let the people have their bombs we got them? The truth is that if people choose something rather than peace, it doesn't matter where these people are from. I think our media has to be re-educated. I think they don't allow real statistics of those real people there to surface. Media focuses too much to those leaders, then those leaders cannot reference to people. Media just becomes propoganda. It is a fraud of the media that they don't get enough channels for these people express themselves and listen to other people's opinion.

Israel uses nukes as a defensive and deterrent weapon since it had them for a long time. Does any sensible soul in the world think that should Iran or any islamic Middle East country (other than Pakistan) should have nukes, what would have happened? Also, why the conflict is ALWAYS islam versus Judaism/Jews, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism etc whereas if you exclude islam, everyone coexists in peace.

The guy from SJ has no idea what he is talking about. The other two are at least looking at it objectively, with out the ideological bull that the Liberal guy has bought into. Yeah cause commando strikes really keeps the peace?!?!? And the US has made more insurgents than it has killed? BBC reported AQI numbers have gone from 12000 to 1200.... something that the US media which is clearly where the liberal guy is getting his info. Aljazeera probably should have looked for someone else to talk to.
