Another thing was that originally the movie was really suppose to be Godzilla, but Toho didn't want to give the rights to J.J. Abrams, so they told him to make Cloverfield and if he did succeed then they will give him the rights. The manga is called Cloverfield: Kishin or something like that, but it talks about mostly the origin of the monster where did it come from. In ways, I do hope J.J. Abrams does get the rights to do Godzilla, cuz I just want to see what he can do with Godziila.

Okay...here's the whole truth and look back into the original script of this movie. The monster is not an Alien at all, yet the object you do see is a satellite crashed into the ocean. It was ordered to be brought down from Slusho's company and correct me if i'm wrong in order to make their ingredients "Slusho". While they were getting the satellite, the crash woke up the monster and grew from the ingredients, which it got so big and attack the oil refinery. Don't believe, check out the manga!
