This is my piano transcription of "Ghanana Ghanana" from Lagaan (2001). Amir Khan is one of my most favorite actors, and I absolutely loved this movie. This version is kind of remixed, with a hint of rock and classical piano. I hope you like it!

I was inspired to try this on the piano a few months ago when on one warm day I was hoping for some cool rain. I saw clouds come and go by; but, it did not rain! This reminded me of Lagaan...got to my room and tried it out :)

In the movie, the villagers, unable to successfully farm anything due to the severe drought, become hopeful and are filled with joy as they see dark clouds float towards their village. They sing and dance requesting the clouds to rain...but the ungenerous clouds float away without sprinkling a drop. Fortunately, towards the end of the movie, the clouds do return...and this time...they're generous...it rains.

Very symbolic...suits the lyrics, melody, and tone of the song very well.

Composer - A R Rahman (one of my all-time favorites). Congratulations to him on that Oscar for Slumdog! He really deserves it.

  • Thanks Ashish! I'm really glad you liked it. This is one my favorite songs and it turned out to be a very piano-friendly song.

  • Whoa ! Amazing !

I thought only few songs are piano friendly... only some songs can be played on piano... u proved me wrong !

  • Thanks gauravspawar! Yeah this song was borderline piano friendly, so did have to slightly alter the rhythm and touch. It was a challenge to synchronize the beats since the original song is done on purely traditional and acoustic percussion instruments. Took some tweaking but worked out in the end.
