According to World Bank estimates 150 billion cubic metres of natural gas are flared (burned off as waste) every year - enough gas to power the United States for three months. Nigeria alone burns off enough gas to power half of Africa for a year, yet most Nigerians have no access to electricity.
they should go to nigeria delta and cap that gas and use it for energy

@victube0418 Well production like that is only temporary. You would need a powerplant that you could move from place to place as each new well is drilled. You would also need to have a power grid to put the electricity into.

It is an interesting issue. Anyway the problem is not so simple. Maybe producing electricity with gas is simple, but costly infrastructure to distribute the electricity may be needed. Compressing and purify gas for transportation is expensive and might not be profitable in some situations (even in terms of energy balance).

How can there be no market for electricity produced from those gas flares! Who doesn't need electricity? The way we're wasting all these valuable resources now, nothing will be left not in the distant future but in the nearest future. The consequences of this wastefulness will leave us all gasping our breaths trying to find some quick fix to a litany of problems! And as usual we won't act until the last barrel of oil is extracted from the ground.
