Rapture thrillers, '70s style!

Donald Thompson's Rapture dramas range from fascinating to dull as dishwater (often within the same scene). The first film, A Thief in the Night (1972), is distinguished by the awesomely '70s end-times love them, "I Wish We'd All Been Ready" (hear it once and recall it forever). The later entries move into Bond territory (following the ' 70s belief that "explosions make the action picture"). Thompson's films clearly sketch out all the situations later codified into Xtian cliché by Tim LaHaye's Left Behind series (the bestselling novels -- now, ain't that scary? -- and the Kirk Cameron tie-in movies) and the Cloud 9 series of star-studded Tribulation action pics. Thompson's movies don't have the flash of the recent wacky pack of Rapture dramas, but they do have the charming, innocent-seeming simplicity of all '70s exploitation (instead of selling T&A and violence, they offer the "accept Christ or go to hell, heathen scum!" msg and violence).
