All that is remaining is finally located, due to the New Sheepskin Bike Trail which opened on May 29, 2008, a short spur route to the Great Allegheny Passage near Connellsville, PA.   • I for one, like trails like this simply because you are out in nature, where it is peaceful and quite, and very relaxing. Also, I like the idea that it once was for railroads, and now trails for people to enjoy. And I think that railroads should be able to reserve the right to keep that area in case they one day decide to use it again. Just as much, I like knowing some history of the trail(s) that I am riding on. It always makes me wonder how many people have come through the same way.

  • What I'm still unclear about is the stone overpass bridge and alleged tunnels in the Wheeler area. Have not seen much documentation or footage to that effect.

    Another note, because of the junkyard at WB, the PRR line could not be used to connect with the WM/GAP trail north of the trestles. As far as my records indicate, there is still evidence of the connecting spur and was the PRR's only connection to the WM in this area.

  • What you're actually seeing here that the author does not make clear mention of is that the Sheepskin uses the old PRR line north out of Dunbar, and then crosses the existing B&O/CSX line to use the WM Bowest yard to connect with GAP trail at Bowest Jct. The current unused PRR ROW does parallel Bowest on the left side of the creek but then runns directly through a junkyard at Wheeler Bottom and then under the north WM trestle over WB to then parallel the WM/GAP trail north into S Connellsville.

  • I like this posting as I have seen the other ones on the Fayette Central R.R. that you posted. Very interesting and the trail looks like a great place to pedal.

  • wow, the trail actually crosses a railroad track, sounds a little dangerous, should have lights and arms that go down, just like on the highways.

  • Just returned from cycling from Ohiopyle to Connellsville on Thursday. Photographed the Sheepskin trail and will be certain to cycle it next visit .... will be absolutely wonderful when the connection is made with the Morgantown trails.
