Matthias Loibner is one of the world's leading hurdy gurdy players. In 2011 Matthias appeared in a live studio session on BBC Radio 3's World on 3 with Lopa Kothari.

He plays hurdy-gurdy in an unheard-of way. He treats his instrument tenderly or relentlessly and oscillates between nearly forgotten and newly found sounds - from ancient music to experimental dancefloor in solo-concerts, in a duo "Ajvar&Sterz" with Bosnian singer Natasa Mirkovic-DeRo and "FIDIBUS" with Austrian quarter-tone trumpet player Franz Hautzinger) and in orchestras.

He also plays with Ross Daly, deishovida and with Christophe Coin and Ensemble Baroque de Limoges he is performing the very rare Instrument Lira Organizzata, a special reconstruction.

In 1994 Matthias won the first prize at the "Concours de vielles et cornemuse", St. Chartiers. He has taken part in numerous film-and theatre-productions. In summer 2006 his Solo-CD "passages" was released in Paris at Phillipe Kruemm's label "cinqu planetes" and won the "Pasticcio-Preis" of Austrian Radio Oe1.

His newest CD-production -Schubert's WINTERREISE (version for voice & hurdy-gurdy, with Natasa Mirkovic-DeRo) will be released in Nov 10 @ RAUMKLANG records.

  • Isn't it basically like a crank violin with the bow being the wheel on the strings?

  • He definitely proves the versatility of the instrument.

  • My God! Usually the hurdy gurdy sounds like a strangled cat but this is amazing! It makes me want to take up the instrument but I'd probably end up sounding like in strangling a cat. Superb playing. Thanks

  • is the song he demonstrates on iTunes? haha

  • This guy is amazing. I have heard a few hurdy gurdy players but the subtleties he gets out of that are incredibel. The way he bends the notes etc are fantastic!
