Ms Palin does not seem to have a basic knowledge of history, much like her Tea party co-member, Rep. Michele Bachmann, who erroneously stated "...we also know that the very founders who wrote those documents worked tirelessly until slavery was no more"... blah blah blah, in regards to how and when slavery ended in the United States.
Such revelations are beginning to spur talk of whether minimum competency exams should be a requirement for those seeking public office, especially high level ones.
Sputnik does not appear to have been the cause of the collapse of the USSR.
Sputnik launch: October 4, 1957
Dissolution of the Soviet Union: The weakening of the Soviet government led to a series of events that eventually caused the dissolution of the Soviet Union, a gradual process that took place from about January 19, 1990, to December 31, 1991.

I forget some history at times, but then again I have had two head injuries where I lost consciousness, one for about one hour and the other for about a week. I don't get some people at times and what is strange is that she is the female version of George W. Bush. If anyone noticed, it was during the Bush admin that people here started to drop a few levels as far as any kind of intelligence was concerned. Just saying...

@BloatedSensations ...(5) That is what the USSR wanted everyone to believe. I did believe it for most of my life. Then I got hold of a copy of some of their financial records and documents. Their economy was the worst in the world. 1/2 of the missiles and weapons they displayed and kept in missile silos were dummies. And about 40% of their citizens had no healthcare. Sputnik was an enormous expense for the USSR. In fact the high cost kept them from ever going to the moon.

@BloatedSensations "If the party on wrong side of the facts holds to a stupid error in fact, then they are indeed stupid..." Well then, according to your own definition you are "an idiot", because you don't have all the facts. (2) It has everything to do with it because you implied that Sputnik was the name of the USSR's Space program. (3) Wrong again, the arms race is a significant event that crippled the USSR. (4) Your right, you also have to pay attention I do but you don't...

@BondFreek (4) I don't care if you're 500 years old and lived through 125% of it - it doesn't make you immune from ignorance. The fact that you seem to believe that mere presence necessitates an informed state further verifies my initial assessment of you. (5) The USSR was an eventual economic disaster. They managed to get along pretty well for the better part of 70s years - rising to the status of a world super-power. Sputnik had NOTHING to do with their eventual collapse.

@BondFreek ...if you believe that 2+2=5, then we don't merely share a difference of opinion. You are, then, in fact, stupid. (2) I know what Sputnik was. Your statement is irrelevant. It has no bearing on anything. (3) The arms race portion of your comment is irrelevant to the topic. Palin never mentioned the arms race - your bringing it up now is an attempt to rationalize your position...

@BondFreek "Calling people stupid is not only rude but not correct." - It may be rude, so be it. It's not incorrect if the person you're directing the comment to is, in fact, an idiot. "Just because someone disagrees with you or gets their facts wrong does not make them stupid." - This isn't a disagreement of opinions, it's a disagreement in fact. If the party on wrong side of the facts holds to a stupid error in fact, then they are indeed stupid...

@CasperCee ? You're telling me to learn MY history? The period after world WWI was the era of the Weimar Republic in Germany. The Nazis the didn't take control until 1933. And, during their tenure, they relaxed gun control, wanted to get rid of public health care, crushed organized labor, privatized every one of Germany's state arsenals, rounded up and killed socialists, leftists, liberals, homosexuals, closed most of the nursing homes and mental institutions.. and on, and on...

@BloatedSensations Learn your history. After WWI the German government expanded & gained control over the economy. After the war, municipalities were subsidized, the German government had control of health insurance, it subsidized artists (there were government theaters & opera houses), they owned businesses, railroads, etc.
