Oh man.
This is pretty old. I was using AE for that. I've since then done exactly what you described though I've also added Trapcode Lux (I think it's called Lux) to get a slight volumetric lighting effect happening as well.

Nice attempt. What editing suite are you using? With AE you could do a track motion (of the gunship), apply a null object and utilise the CC Spotlight effect.
