For my veteran brothers. This was written and sung by Joseph Kilna Mackenzie lamenting his great grand father, Sgt. Charles Stuart Mackenzie of the Seaforth Highlanders who was killed during WWI. Text is the English translation. Song was presented in the movie We Were Soldiers.

  • I had never heard this before but was led to this by a letter in the Daily Mail 18 January 2012 which told how Joseph Mackenzie, grieving after the death of his wife, wrote this song after looking at a picture of his great grandfather, Sgt MacKenzie: "I looked at his picture to ask what gave him the strength to go on. It was then, in my mind, that I saw him lying on the field and wondered what his final thoughts were. The words and music just appeared in my head."

  • We volunteered because it was the right thing to do. We fought for each other. And Dr. David Westphall built Angel Fire Memorial.
