These are nurse mare foals from the 2010 season. A nurse mare foal is a foal that was born only so that its mother would produce milk. It's mother is then sent off to nurse a "more valuable" baby, and these nurse mare foals are 'disposed of'. They are essentially a byproduct of the industry. The Last Chance Corral in Athens, Ohio, rescues as many of these orphans as they can and places them in loving homes. This video is of the foals playing in the big paddock for the first time! The foals in this video are 19 of 80 that we have done in 2010... with more to come! If you are interested in adopting a nurse mare foal, please visit www.lastchancecorral.org, or call us at (740)-594-4336! Thanks for watching!

  • Once they know how to drink from a bucket, we use the free access system. The milk replacer formula we us is very expensive. In the past we have been blessed with some very generous donations without which we could not continue to keep our doors open.

As you might expect, the recent economic downturn has greatly affected us: there is an increased need for our services and a decrease in people's ability to support our program financially. Sometimes it's hard, but it's so worth it.

  • When you say that the mothers are sent of to nurse more valuable foals, are we talking thoroughbreds (racehorses) here?

  • Yes, though anyone can lease a nurse mare if they wanted. The majority of them are for TBs though. Live cover is not allowed in the Jockey Club, so the mares have to travel to be bred, and shipping her TB foal with her is too risky, so they lease a nurse mare.

  • wow this a shame, I hope there is a section of hell people for who do this. What gorgeous babies God Save them . and thank you for all you do

  • @LastChanceCorral I think you mean that AI is not allowed by the Jockey Club. They demand live cover.

  • Awwww babies, If I wanted to say adopt one of these little guys how far will you drive them? I live in Minnesota. We use to breed Arabian Halter horses but got out of it when I started showing ASB. We had one foal orphaned by her mare so we hand raised her and she grew up to be the nicest horse ever. I would LOVE to rescue one of these little guys to have as a pasture buddy for my show horse, my mare who we hand raised, and maybe be a good trail riding horse as well.

  • I love the markings on the foal at 0:09 so cute =3

  • Shame, shame, shame on the breederes who produce these foals that are so unwanted just so their mothers can be used to feed more valuable foals.

  • Aww how cute are they!! :D

  • One word AW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • awee

  • They are so cute. I wish I could adopt one. Maybe in the future :) I'll definitely keep you all in mind. :)
