Skeeter Davis sings 'The End of the World' live at the Midnight Special (early '70s). The song was her biggest hit in 1963 and of her career. Reaching #2 on Billboards country and pop charts,#1 Adult Contemporary Easy Listening hit and #4 hit on Billboard's rhythm and blues (R&B) chart. A remarkable achievement since nobody has done that before. Lyrics were written by Sylvia Dee in memory of her father and the music by Arthur Kent.

Lyric:
Why does the sun go on shining
Why does the sea rush to shore
Don't they know it's the end of the world
Cause you don't love me anymore

Why do the birds go on singing
Why do the stars glow above
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when I lost your love

I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everything's the same as it was
I can't understand no I can't understand
How life goes on the way it does

Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye

Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye

  • Skeeter was my third cousin, and at all the reunions she always led prayer and I couldn't wait for it to be over because she would always sing!! My Grandpa Todd Lawrence would play any instrument and perform with her.... I miss them both so much!!

  • @Hartlandincincy YOU WERE BLESSED TO HAVE KNOWN HER SO CLOSE...

  • @Hartlandincincy - how fortunate for you to have such a famous singer in the family!!! Did she ever marry and have children or was her life like the song??? I can so easily remember this song in 1963 - I was 15 then.

  • What a Star! I love the way she sings, and this song in particular.

  • @mhs513 :)

  • If you need a good cry, and who doesn't every now and then, this song will do it. And that's a compliment.

  • @ArwenPendragon like in Girl, Interrupted
