Aside from a knife or edged tool, rope is the most important tool we can bring with us into the wilderness. But rope is useless without knots. Knots make rope work for us, and a knowledge of a few basic concepts will help us use rope efficiently. That will make our stay in the wild much more hospitable. In this multipart series I explain the basic concepts, terminology, types, form and function of the most important knots to know for wilderness camping and survival.

  • would you be able to show how to rig a tackle system and explain some of it's practical uses? your videos are great, very clear and concise. thank you!

  • Thanks! I intend to contonue this series soon. I'm looking into getting a better camera and finding a good space to shoot my vids. Stay tuned!

  • is the hanger knot in part 2 just a big noose with lots of coils?

  • Precisely.

  • unless you will touch on the taught line hitch, in upcoming vids, that's the most used ( I feel) in the field. thanks for the the knots. please feel free to demonstrate how to lash. thats useful for shelters.

  • The tautline hitch IS in my video on Hitches. Please see Part 6.
