It continued to do this after replacing both batteries (they were from Walmart though so I don't know if they were "good"). Judging voltage off the gauge isn't accurate because all the gauges aren't powered. If it's a battery issue, why does it happen only when it's cold? Wouldn't it also happen when it's warmer? The fact that it is triggered almost precisely at 25 degrees really confuses me.

The Voltage gauge registers very low with the key on, it needs to be above 10 volts otherwise the grid heater solenoid will not stay closed so it clicks off. Grid heaters will draw 100-200amps on their cycle, if the batteries are not up to the task, then when they try to cycle, the voltage drops too low and the solenoid clicks off. It is doing the exact thing a starter solenoid does when your batteries are low, it clicks. new GOOD batteries, and i would imagine this problem will go away.

It only happens below 25° when it hasn't been started in a while. The grid heater works normally above that temperature.

That's what I thought. I replaced the grid heater last year and it still did this. I'm at a complete loss. I put on a remote start that starts it every 3 hours and masks the problem, but it'd be better to actual fix it.

its your grid heater, that noise it the relay trying to turn it on and then the bad/shorted out heater it drawing way too much power and kicking back off because of it, that is also why your preheat light is flashing

Hmm if your grid heater was replaced than its gotta be wiring related.

The Cummins engines don't use glow plugs, they use a manifold heater to do the same thing. I replace that about a month ago and the problem is exactly as it was before.
