It's melodramatic, smarmy sounding, and not convincing. I feel like I'm being told a story by uncle, except it's that annoying uncle you regretted sitting down to talk to as a kid- when you would really rather be outside trying the new supersoaker he bought you as a bribe for this. Of course, as Dostoevsky's devil said: "Without criticism there would be nothing but 'Hosannah.'"

I did enjoy this! I think, though, it would be better done to have Ivan in the room with the Devil. When I read this chapter in the novel, I had the image of Ivan being absolutely tormented by every word the devil had spoken, split between denying the Devil's presence and trying to discredit the Devil's words as though he were his opponent. I just imagined the Devil speaking more or less to himself, reflectively, and then taking pleasure in the pain he was inflicting onto Ivan.. Fine job though!
