Presently, the work in NCLB and much of school reform, measures the same narrow set of standards that do not include the lives or the work of children outside those limited standards. The expectations for that policy, held by the political community, assume that student success will be achieved by teaching to those standards, exclusively; in this case, the bar set does not represent a high standard, or an appropriate one. What requires serious consideration are the bigger-picture needs and interests of each child, as well as the development and enrichment of outside influences that enhance those interests and the learning environment. Outside the box isnt far enough here. Pushing outside the box, schools must also consider the host of spaces students occupy, outside of schools.
