usually basses don't face the center due to limited space. if the stood side by side, there wouldn't be much room for them to hit their drums. if they needed to hit hard, they would most likely hit the person next to them or the wrong bass.

Bass drums aren't supposed to. They stand parallel with the sidelines too during field shows.
