If it works. There are economists on both sides of the issue of a national sales tax in place of an income tax. It would still allow for all the social engineering, instead of tax breaks, items would have a lower or higher tax- like happens at the state level now.

It's one very large mega corporation that is hiding ALL of it's money in an offshore tax haven, which doesn't happen. If it did, they would all be doing it. The people of the US don't really like it when companies don't pay taxes so it's in their best interests (usually) to just find loopholes instead of going offshore. I am currently applying for grants to test the effectiveness of a sales tax on nonessential goods. It would make loopholes and tax evasion basically impossible.
