Would this film get made today? In my humble view, Lonely Are the Brave is as much about the end of the American frontier as it is about a loner's search to live his individual life as he sees fit; the tensions between individual freedom and the common good. Question is: can that tension be resolved. If so, does the individual fare better than the collective or vice versa? The ambiguous ending reflects the open-ended nature of the question.
I was 8 and growing up in Albuquerque in 1962, frequently playing in the foothills of the Sandias. This movie has haunted me in a positive way ever since I first saw it. Sad and poignant indeed. Douglas made another NM movie about a cynical newsman covering a mine collapse near Gallup- can't remember the name.

@bhf31 The film you are trying to remember is 'Ace In The Hole' directed by Billy Wilder in 1951. Another truly great movie.

Thanks so much for posting this ChisoxGuy.
What a great video this is. This is a really great movie, and it's great to see Kirk is still so fond of it too.
I relate to this movie very much. The cowboy didn't have an easy life, but he lived life greatly.

A great movie. A great sad poignant movie. Our society seems like it's going to end up like Whiskey.
