Here is the Galway Hornpipe -- a dance tune named for Galway, the seaport on Ireland's western shore.

I posted this tune earlier on the mandolin. But here it is played here on the mandocello, the baritone voice or the mandolin family.

The mandocello is tuned CGDA -- the same as the violin-cello -- pitched an octave and a fifth below the mandolin.

And like the mandolin and mandola the mandocello has 8 strings arranged in four courses.

This is a 1936 Gibson K-1 mandocello with D'Addario J78 phosphpor-bronze strings and a D'Andrea Pro-plec pick.

  • nicely done. you have some serious fret buzz, I'd recommend having a technician look at your mando.

  • @rbloch66 Thanks for listening and the kind words! I'm just a self-taught picker. Yes you are correct a lot of buzz -- this was couple of years ago. What was happening and what I had not yet noticed was that the original ebony bridge saddle was bending -- lowering the G and D courses. I eventually broke. Abouty 60 lbs (down vector) on a mandocello bridge. Been fixed. Thanks for the GREAT Mike Marshall video -- looks like a John D'Angelico mandocello!

  • Your playing is very good , I'd just move the right hand a little to the fretboard so you can get a mellower tone...beautiful instrument , congrats !!

  • Thanks for visiting my channel and also for your kind remarks.

Your suggestion is well taken and a great idea. I'm still in my infancy with the m'cello and I need to spend a lot more time developing my technique.

I have recently started playing the tenor banjo and tenor guitar and these two insturments will help me break out of my mandolin and mandola "habits".

  • Nicely done! I really like this tune and it sounds great on the mandocello. I want one!

    Pick On!

  • Thanks!

Yeah the mandocello is a very cool axe and great fun for a mandolin player.

It is surprisingly a different beast to play as you definately find your left hand doing different patterns -- your little finger has ot get in to the act whether it wants to or not .

But that is a good thing. Thanks for watching.

  • rais the bridge a bit till it quit buzzing

  • Haven't a clue -- all I did I think is "favorite it" I've wondered about that myself -- YouTube has a lot of software dark allies that you can wander into with no warning!

  • Also,

I was checking out your profile page and noticed several videos that are playable without exiting the page. For example, "Brown County Breakdown" by PickerDan; how did you do that?

  • good pickin! love that deep tone of the mandocello
