My Smart Cdi Passion bought new in March 2010 from the Stockton on Tees dealership is called Robert and he has given me a genuine 91mpg on a journey from my home in Llandudno to Keswick in the Lakes.
You see very carefull driving at a steady 50mph up the M6 will return amazing fuel economy in Britains most fuel efficient transport.
@NicholasBelgium turns out - mechanic that had done work on our CDI a few weeks before - didn't clean up his workplace properly before closing up engine. Gasket fell into cylinder (I'm not being technical here - but debris got into engine) - this caused melt down of engine. After being a squeak wheel - garage admitted their fault with work done prior - we didn't fork out $10K for new engine - had loaner gas Smart for month - new engine has 2-year warranty!!
I have a 2006 Smart CDI that does NOT rule at this point in time. Engine failed at 61,000 km - diagnose reveals #1 cylinder kaput - Smart Canada / Mercedes-Benz being very mum about the fact that some CDI engines have a problem (told this by mechanic working on our car). So far, we are waiting to see if engine can be repaired or worst case scenario new engine at $8K + taxes. Sadly, for a car of this age, might as well buy another smaller car by another manufacturer. So sad :(
