Martin Amis in conversation with Christopher Hitchens
Martin Amis talks to Christopher Hitchens about Saul Bellow with whom he developed an intimate friendship, about the role of the writer as intellectual, the threat of political correctness to the comic novel, Islam, Israel and horrorism.

Martin Amis is considered as one of the most influential and innovative voices in contemporary British fiction. He is the author of novels, short stories and essays. His most recent book is House of Meetings.

Christopher Hitchens left the UK for the US in 1981 where he is columnist and contributing editor at Vanity Fair. Both an atheist and anti-atheist, an iconoclast, anti-fascist and humanist, he was voted in 2005 fifth out of the worlds top one hundred public intellectuals.

  • @llewohnewo "Hey youtube, look at my impressive vocabulary. LOOK AT IT!!!" I see a few signs of satire, but I'm not completely sure that the irony of your post was by design.

  • @llewohnewo Do calm down sweetheart. I know these words, but your post was tiresomely overwrought. Brevity is the soul of wit yes? The irony is that you seem to be complaining about just this. In your last post, you claimed public insults were not your bag; perhaps you should re-read your original rant. I still think you are just performing a semi-clever satire. If not, you are merely a shallow pedant; a pretentious pseudo-intellectual, supercilious yet truly diffident ma...Wow, this is fun!

  • And nothing of value was lost!

  • I am Jewish and a huge fan of Hitch. I think his commentary regarding antisemitism is very insightful. (and I say this as one who has extensively studied the topic) However, it bothers me how he uses the word 'we'. What real experience with the diaspora does he have? Has his mother's tombstone been vandalized? Has he been egged while walking down the street? Has he been assaulted following any of Israel's actions? These are all things that many Jews in Europe frequently experience, but not him.

  • @nick101984

americans listening to him feel more intelligent for listening to him 'cos of his accent!

  • adding to that i saw him with Pat Buchanan on CSPAN and you see how he is just a front. i mean Pat Buchanan smoked Hitchens, with whatever question he gave a an answer with valid points and you understood his opinion, whether if you agreed with it or not. Hitchens on the other hand rambles on, talking, but not saying anything. He says quick witted one liners as somehow thinking it will get him out of making an intelligent argument. Hes just a phony for the most part.

  • ive been watching Christopher Hitchens clips on youtube all night. i keep getting caught up in his accent thinking he will say something intelligent. The guy just rambles on never really makes a clear point and i just continue thinking well maybe next argument he will have something.

  • Suddenly affectation! Everywhere!

  • @sybo59 Hahahah, good response, but really, that guy's post spoke for itself.

  • He left out Schoenberg in his list of important early 20th century jewish thinkers
