Hello all!

I did this video to test the basic capabilities of the Hornady Critical Defense/ Zombie ammunition compared against basic Full Metal Jacket ammunition. I tested it from a Springfield Armory .45 ACP M1911-A1.

The standard FMJ .45 ACP round is a 230 grain bullet, while Hornady's "Critical Defense" and "Zombie" ammo are 185 grain bullets. The Zombie ammunition that Hornady just recently came out with is actually a carbon copy of their Critical Defense line, except Critical Defense has nickle-plated brass and a red rubber tip instead of a green tip. Ballistics-wise, they are the same and act the same, so you can expect the same results for Hornady's "Z-max" zombie ammunition.

THE TEST
I basically constructed a non-scientific test to see the basic results of your basic FMJ bullet versus the Critical Defense/Zombie ammo from Hornady. As you can see, the basic FMJ ammo just punches a hole through the jug, and it has little actual violent energy as the jug just bounces slightly and mainly bleeds out through the holes. The Critical Defense expands and transfers quite a bit of destructive energy to the water, rupturing the jug and blasting the water all around. Even through a 5/8" thick piece of plywood, Critical Defense still keeps its integrity and punches through it, wreaking havoc on the jug behind the wood. If it can punch through 5/8" of laminated plywood and still be deadly on the other end, it should have no problem with thick clothing. The test has no actual data and in the industry is considered a non-scientific test, but it is here to show you the basic effects of both types of ammo. Hornady claims that Critical Defense can punch through basic objects and obstacles and cause massive, shredding wounds within the target, causing extreme trauma and lots of blood loss. After this test, I have no doubt it does exactly that. It's a grim topic to think about, but when your life is in danger, you want the best ammo to protect yourself, and for me that ammo is Hornady Z-max (basically the "Zombie" version of Critical Defense).

Critical Defense is basically a Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP) but it has a rubberized tip that prevents thick cotton and other material from getting packed in the hollow point of the bullet. Hornady calls this their FTX bullet. This basically allows it to punch through basic cover and obstacles and still remain completely deadly when it hits the actual target. The 185 grain bullets reduce recoil quite a bit, allowing for repeat shots pretty quickly. The nickle-plated brass resists corrosion and moisture, while the crimping on the bullet keeps it firmly seated in the brass, resisting the "stuffing" effect after many times of being chambered and re-chambered. The powder is a low recoil, low flash powder which prevents fireballs from flashing at night, preventing a total destruction of night vision in dark situations.

I am not paid or endorsed by Hornady, but I love their Critical Defense ammo and its copy, the zombie ammo and I actually carry the zombie ammunition every day. Ballistic-wise, it's the same stuff, and it's just kind of neat to carry zombie ammo every day. Even though it is a gimmick, and we all know Hornady is taking advantage of the zombie craze right now, it's still a cool box of ammo to own and carry. And best of all, it's ALL BUSINESS in the event I need it.

Getting down to the business: The Critical Defense/Zombie Ammo is some effective stuff for many reasons. It functions and cycles flawlessly in my weapons and it should for you too, but you always want to ensure no matter what ammo you carry, that is cycles and functions just fine in your gun. It won't get packed with material in the hollow tip, maintaining its deadly properties even after punching through basic materials and thick jackets/clothing. It's serious ammo for people that are serious about their safety. Rock on Hornady, it's a great product!
