Ones in remotes are low output ones, you can get high output ones at radio shack. I made infrared night vision goggles with a lot of these put together.

If you get a camera with a nightshot, you´ll see a very bright light with this single IR led.
It shows dimm ´cause the ir filter in your (our... all...) cameras.
