Montserrat always does not speak her words when she sings at the high range...!!! At the aria "In questa Reggia" she says the half words...!!!
-
She was know for "rewriting" her part and words to suit the vocal....

Well, Montserrat Caballe was a great soprano no doubt but Tosca was not her best role...she was an even greater Salome...this role seems to be toodifficult for her, too tiring..it's a heavy dramatic role and when lyric sopranos take it on, they often find it too taxing ...she is dramatic when she's supposed to be but you can tell it's a role that just doesn't quite fit her well...

who is Cavaradossi?
-
si..un pò lenta...ma ottime voci!

Elisabetta...I would venture to say that Caballe was "paying attention" .....there are a few spots, like the one you mentioned, where it is very difficult to sing the words because the vocal tessitura is uncomfortable when balancing it with dramatic intent. It is much easier and better sounding to just sing vowels....than to tie the voice in knots!!!

At 5.15 she is supposed to sing "Ah, piu non posso" and all she does is "aaaaaaaaaa". Pay attention, Montserrat!
BRAVA!!!

Every time I listen to the Torture Scene I think of Maria Callas visually and Leontyne Price vocally. For me, those two were the perfect Toscas. Caballe does well here, too.
