This is a video I made in honour of those who lost their lives when their helicopter went down on the Iron 44 Incident in Northern California. Seven Grayback Forestry Firefighters, a pilot from Carson Helicopters, and a pilot for the U.S. Forest Service lost their lives on August 5, 2008. There were four survivors, and this video is for them as well as for the memory of those who lost their lives, as well as for their familes. I was not on these guys' crew and did not work with them personally, but I am a Graybacker, and I hurt for those involved. A big thank you to Josh Garrels for allowing me to use his song (entitled 'Songbird') in this video.

  • what happened to the Greyback video you put up? I wanted to memorize it, but you took it off?

  • I actually only had it up 'publicly' for a short while, but you must have seen it during that time. it's under private settings now because it's not technically finished. I am waiting to hear back from the CEO of Grayback before I put the finishing touches on it. I will be putting it back up once it's completely done, so you should see it within the next couple weeks. Thanks for the positive comments!

  • Caleb was my cousin...I was out there when this happend. Are whole family saw this at greyback, but I still love it. thanks for making this, we all thank you.

  • you're welcome, i am so sorry about your loss. i wanted to honour them the best way i know how.

  • My name is Matt Presidio. I would like to thank you for this video. I am one of the men that was left on the hill. I watched the chopper go down and was one of the ones that pulled out the survivers. It was my first fire. I will ALWAYS REMEMBER.

  • I was on that fire. I'm on the Ferguson fire crew Out of Redding Cali.

  • the name is familiar- don't think I got a chance to sit with him. they were all great guys.. Did a presentation on the incident and my involvement- this year during a basic wild land class - kind of a lessons learned thing - still hard to talk about- but hopefully the new fire fighters gained something from it.

  • you remember a guy named Caleb Renno?

  • The fight out was scary. Way to close to the trees, you could count the pine needles. had never been that low on previous flights. Was on the ground at the heliport when the crash occurred, and not there when they needed me- my cross to bear- to of come so close to leaving my family is humbling- But we all know the risk and love the job- for me that will never change. rest in peace guys.

  • I was an EMT up there with them during the incident-spent most my time with the Ferguson crew. but some time with the grey back guys on the east side of DP-44- dealing with spot fires. these guys were great- had lunch one day with 3 of them up on top of the ridge line at 7000' watching the fire - it was majestic with the wind blowing- you could see for miles.... flew out with ops right before them on that helo- big push to pull us off due to lighting,-- division didn't want to go.

  • love the video love the song thanks for doing this not just for them but for all firefighters
