I believe this was Number One the day I started school.
I've always found it an eerie little song, the way they're singing about the life, death and then ascension into Heaven of a real person. Memorable and catchy certainly, but not a typical one hit wonder.

I wonder why the scene at 0:41 is filmed in Stockport and not Salford. That is Stockport viaduct in the background.

This was the choice of the TV producer who wanted a "Lowryesque" background, and Lowry did paint a picture of Stockport viaduct

they're not the schoolkids from st winifreds school choir! they look a lot older!

Quite right. Although St Winifred's choir sang on the record, the were to young to appear on Top of the Pops, as the show was recorded after 7pm.
