This is a talk given at Doug's Place (www.94510.org) a non-technical salon in Benicia, California that hosts talks on a variety of subjects ranging from travel to health and personal development. In September 2009 Dr. Wallace was invited to give a presentation on ALICE and AIML. Dr. Wallace talks about the history of chat bots beginning with the story of Alan Turing, and on to Joseph Weizenbaum, ELIZA, Hugh Loebner, robot minimalism, Zipf's Law, PNAMBIC, consciousness and the origin and function of AIML free software.
